This image depicts a unit of currency of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. Copyright of the designs of the coins, except where stated below, is the responsibility of the Reserve Bank.

Section 30 of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand Act 1989 (the Act) restricts the reproduction of New Zealand banknotes and coins, and all other banknotes and coins if reproduced in New Zealand, to protect the integrity of New Zealand's money, ensure public confidence in the value of currency, and to prevent counterfeiting and imitations.

The Reserve Bank has no objection to the reproduction of its currency as complete on-screen or printed images, for design, educational or illustrative purposes, except when it cannot grant permission for detailed reproduction due to intellectual property reasons. The intellectual property exception covers the image of Elizabeth II, Queen of New Zealand on the obverse of all coins (property of The Crown) and the Pukaki image on the reverse of the 20-cent coin (property of Ngati Whakaue, used by RBNZ with permission).

Permission for reproduction is granted provided that:

For photographs, drawings, paintings, films and generally for any type of image in which the focus is not the bank notes/coins or reproductions themselves and which do not provide a close-up view of the bank note/coin designs;
For one-sided reproductions, provided these are more than 125% or less than 75% of both the length and width (or coin diameter) of the respective bank note/coin, irrespective of the material used for the reproduction. Any materials used for coin reproduction must not be metal or metallic like.

Any other usage of them, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, may be copyright infringement. Refer RBNZ's reproduction criteria for more information.

Additional legal restrictions outside of copyright law including laws regarding counterfeiting may also apply, particularly when this image is used in printed form; RBNZ's reproduction criteria as mentioned above may apply.

Under Section 29 the Act, the making or issuing any (New Zealand or otherwise) bank note or coin, other than a bank note or coin issued under the Act, is prohibited. Any individual contravening this section shall be liable on conviction for imprisonment not exceeding 3 years, or a fine not exceeding 100,000 NZD.
